Queen Rearing

April 18 , 2017

On April 18, we removed the two virgin queens that had emerged in the Cell Finisher Colony and placed them in the Queen Castle. Today, we opened the protective cages that the queens were in and watched as they walked out of the cage and into the hive between two frames. I get a lot of enjoyment out of seeing this action. We will leave the queens alone for 7 days, only replenishing the sugar water and  pollen patties as needed. During this period, it is hope the queens will become mated and return to the hive and begin laying eggs. We will observe the queens for a period of time to determine if she has the characteristics which we desire. We will return on April 25 or 26 to exam the colony.
